Why do porta potties smell?

Porta potty odor comes from heat, a full tank and poor airflow. Every unit has a roof vent and a deodorizing tank treatment, but direct sun on a hot Harrisburg afternoon, where July highs average about 87°F, speeds up odor. Shade and airflow make the biggest difference.

How can you reduce porta potty odor at an event?

Place the unit in shade, downwind of guests, with the door facing away from the party and the roof vent unblocked. Keep the lid closed when possible, and size the order correctly so the tank never runs close to full during the event.

  • Shade from a tree, garage or tent wall
  • Downwind and about 50 feet from food
  • Roof vent clear of branches and tarps
  • Enough units: 1 per 200 guest-hours

What should you put next to a porta potty?

Put a small trash can with a lid next to the porta potty so paper towels, wipes and diapers do not go into the tank. Extra toilet paper, a path light for evening guests and a hand-wash station nearby round out the setup.

When should you call for an extra service?

Call for an extra service visit when the tank is more than about two-thirds full, the paper is gone and you still have a day of use left, or a multi-day event is running. An extra visit costs $75, and monthly units already get weekly service.

Quick answers

Should guests throw paper towels into the porta potty?

Paper towels, wipes and diapers should go in a trash can, not the tank. They do not break down and can clog the service hose.
