What makes a good porta potty spot?
A good porta potty spot is level within about 2 inches, firm enough not to sink, within about 15 feet of where our service truck can park, and clear of overhead wires, doors and septic lids. Driveways, gravel pads and flat lawns all work well.
- Level ground: grass, gravel, asphalt or concrete
- Within about 15 feet of truck parking
- 4 × 4 ft for a standard unit; 8 × 8 ft for an accessible unit
- Door facing away from guests, the street or prevailing wind
- Clear of septic lids, sprinkler heads and buried lines
Will a porta potty fit through my gate?
A standard porta potty is about 44 inches wide, so it needs a gate or path at least 48 inches wide. A wheelchair-accessible unit is about 7.5 feet wide and needs driveway-width access. Measure the narrowest point between the truck and the spot before you book.
Can a porta potty go on a Harrisburg street or sidewalk?
A porta potty in a Harrisburg street or parking lane needs a street closure request to the City Engineer at least 3 business days before placement, with a traffic control plan. Units on private property, including rear yards and alley pads on your lot, need no city permit.
How far from food should a porta potty be?
Place porta potties about 50 feet from food tables and downwind when possible, with doors facing away from the eating area. Put the hand-wash station between the toilets and the food so guests pass it on the way back.
What about river and flood areas?
The Susquehanna River reaches flood stage at 17 feet at Harrisburg; the record crest was 33.27 feet during Hurricane Agnes in 1972. For events and job sites in Shipoke, City Island, Riverfront Park and low West Shore lots, we watch river forecasts and move units to higher ground before a crest.

Do I need to be home when the porta potty is placed?
You do not need to be home. Mark the spot with a cone or chair, unlock the gate, and the driver texts a photo after placing the unit.
