Renting a Porta Potty in a Harrisburg Winter
Harrisburg's average January low is 23°F, cold enough to freeze an untreated porta potty tank overnight. Here is how we keep winter rentals working, and what you can do on site.

Does a porta potty freeze in winter?
A porta potty tank can freeze when temperatures stay below 32°F for several hours, which happens most nights from December through February in Harrisburg. A freeze-resistant charge added to the tank at each service keeps the contents liquid so the unit can still be used and pumped.
From November through March, every Cory Rental Works service visit adds that charge to the tank. You do not need to request it.
Which units should you avoid in freezing weather?
Avoid deluxe flushing units and porta potties with water sinks when nights drop below freezing, because their fresh-water lines and foot pumps freeze. Use standard units with hand sanitizer, or a restroom trailer that stays plugged in so its heat protects the plumbing.
| Unit | Below 32°F? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Standard porta potty | Works | No water lines; tank treated |
| Unit with water sink | Avoid | Sink water freezes |
| Deluxe flushing | Avoid | Flush water freezes |
| Restroom trailer | Works if powered | Built-in heat |
| Hand-wash station | Avoid | Water tank freezes |
Where should a winter porta potty be placed?
Place a winter porta potty out of the wind, with the door facing south or toward a building, on ground that will not turn to ice. Keep it within about 15 feet of a spot our truck can reach after snow, and keep that path plowed or shoveled.
- Shovel and salt a path to the door
- Keep the truck's parking spot plowed
- Do not set units on low spots that pond and freeze
- Clear snow off the roof vent after heavy storms
What happens if the service truck can't reach the unit after snow?
If snow blocks the service truck, the visit is moved to the next day the path is clear, with no extra charge. Units on unplowed lanes or deep in a lot can miss service, so on winter job sites we place units next to plowed drives or the site entrance.

Can I use a porta potty at a January event in Harrisburg?
Standard units work for January events. Skip sink and flushing units, and choose a powered restroom trailer if guests expect running water.
